Carrick Signs Two-Year Deal as Manchester United's Permanent Manager
Manchester United have confirmed Michael Carrick as permanent head coach on a two-year contract, ending his interim status after five months in charge. The 44-year-old former midfielder, who took over on 13 January following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, guided the club to a third-place Premier League finish and a return to Champions League football.
Carrick recorded 11 wins from 16 league matches during his interim spell, accumulating 36 points in that period. A victory over Nottingham Forest mathematically confirmed the top-four finish. Director of football Jason Wilcox said in the club’s official announcement that Carrick had demonstrated results on the pitch alongside “an approach which aligns with the club’s values, traditions and history,” adding that his achievement in returning United to the Champions League “should not be understated.”
Carrick joined Manchester United as a player in 2006 and spent more than a decade at Old Trafford before retiring in 2018. He subsequently managed Middlesbrough before returning to United in a coaching capacity. His familiarity with the club’s structure was a factor cited by the hierarchy in their decision to make the appointment permanent, according to the club statement.
Carrick said on the club’s official website that the group of players had shown “resilience, togetherness and determination” and that the club’s supporters “deserve to be challenging for the biggest honours again.” Attention now turns to the summer transfer window, with United expected to pursue additions capable of sustaining simultaneous domestic and Champions League campaigns.
