DR Congo edge closer to 2026 World Cup spot

DR Congo have effectively been confirmed as Africa’s representative in the 2026 World Cup intercontinental playoffs after FIFA highlighted their preparations in a recent interview with head coach Sébastien Desabre.

FIFA described the Leopards as the team set for the decisive clash on March 31 in Guadalajara, where they will face either Jamaica or New Caledonia for a place in North America. The stance reinforces earlier listings and casts doubt on Nigeria’s pending protest over eligibility issues.

“We’re not afraid of anyone. We’re going to give it our all,” Desabre said, recalling his side’s 4–3 penalty win over Nigeria after a 1–1 draw.

The coach insisted focus remains internal: “We need to stay calm, play our football and deliver on the day.”

DR Congo will fine-tune preparations with a friendly against Bermuda on March 25. “The whole nation will stop to watch,” Desabre added, eyeing a first World Cup appearance since 1974.
