Fernandez Set for Super Eagles Starting Debut Against Jordan

Emmanuel Fernandez will start for Nigeria against Jordan on Tuesday in Antalya, Turkey — just four days after making his first international appearance off the bench.

The 24-year-old Rangers centre-back came on at half-time in Nigeria’s 2-1 friendly win over Iran on March 27, replacing Semi Ajayi. What he showed in that second half was enough. Coach Eric Chelle has handed him the starting spot straight away.

The London-born defender chose Nigeria over England — a decision that clearly means a great deal to him. “When I first got the call to come and play for Nigeria, I was a bit shocked the national team wanted me,” Fernandez said. “I am grateful I am here and I am grateful for the opportunity.”

He joined Rangers in 2025 after progressing through youth football in England and qualifies for the Super Eagles through heritage. His route to senior international football has been quick by any measure.

With Calvin Bassey absent, Chelle is counting on Fernandez to shore up a backline that has looked vulnerable. Tuesday is his chance to make that shirt his own.
