Grier Ends Career After Six NFL Teams, Two Games Played
Will Grier has retired from professional football at the age of 31, announcing the decision on Instagram with the words “Retired today.” The Carolina Panthers, the franchise that drafted him, published a story marking his departure from the sport.
Grier was selected by Carolina in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft following a college career split between the Florida Gators and the West Virginia Mountaineers, where he earned widespread recognition as a starter. Despite spending time on the rosters of six franchises – the Panthers, Dallas Cowboys, Cincinnati Bengals, New England Patriots, Los Angeles Chargers, and Philadelphia Eagles – he appeared in only two NFL regular-season games, both as a rookie with Carolina, finishing his career with 228 passing yards and four interceptions.
Grier had signed with the Panthers as recently as April and was reported to have been offered a coaching role with the Cowboys before choosing to step away from the game entirely. Tributes on his Instagram Stories came from Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott, tight end Jake Ferguson, and quarterback Kenny Pickett, the latter of whom is now on Carolina’s roster.
With Grier’s retirement, the Panthers carry three quarterbacks into training camp: Pickett, Bryce Young, and Haynes King.
