Hamburg Appeal Philip Otele Red Card After Derby Dismissal

Thirteen minutes. That’s all Philip Otele got before it all went wrong.
The Super Eagles winger came off the bench in Hamburg’s derby against Werder Bremen and was sent off in the 79th minute for stomping on Cameron Puertas — a straight red. The club have since appealed to the DFB Sports Court, hoping to have the potential two-match ban overturned or reduced.
Hamburg are confident. Retired referee Manuel Gräfe backed up their frustration, saying the young official “increasingly lost control” of the northern derby. “It came too early for the still relatively inexperienced referee,” Gräfe said.
A decision is expected within days. With Hamburg in a relegation battle, every available player matters.
