Hart Posts Biblical Quote After Texas Board Mandates Scripture in Schools
New York Knicks forward Josh Hart responded on social media to the Texas State Board of Education’s vote to add Bible passages to required reading lists in public schools, posting a line from scripture alongside fire emojis on X. The board approved the measure 9-5-1 on Friday.
The new requirements include the Book of Exodus for fifth graders and the 23rd Psalm, commonly known as “The Shepherd’s Psalm,” for seventh graders. Board member Julie Pickren, a Republican, stated the readings are intended to offer, in her words, “important insight into the moral and philosophical traditions that have shaped Western civilization,” and framed the move as part of a classical education model that she said develops critical thinking through engagement with primary historical documents. Hart, 29, has frequently referenced his faith in postgame interviews and on social media throughout his NBA career.
Hart concluded the 2025-26 season as an NBA champion after the Knicks won the franchise’s first title in decades. Across 19 playoff games, he averaged 10.4 points, 8.9 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 1.7 steals per game, operating as a key two-way contributor rather than a primary scorer. The Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals.
The Texas board’s decision is likely to face legal scrutiny given longstanding constitutional questions around religious instruction in public schools. No timeline for implementation was included in the draft materials reviewed.
