Hot Mic Captures Obscene Remark During Texas Softball Regional Win
An unidentified male voice was picked up by ESPN microphones directing an obscene remark at viewers during the second-ranked Texas Longhorns’ 5-0 victory over Arizona State on Sunday, a win that clinched the Austin Super Regional and secured Texas a berth in the Women’s College World Series. The remark, which occurred after Longhorns pitcher Teagan Kavan moved ahead in the count against an Arizona State batter, was audible in the broadcast but went unacknowledged by play-by-play announcer Kevin Brown, who continued calling the game without interruption.
Brown was mid-discussion about Arizona State manager Megan Bartlett’s track record of developing assistant coaches when the comment aired, suggesting the microphone may have captured audio from somewhere near the field or broadcast position rather than from within the commentary booth itself. The broadcast otherwise proceeded normally, and the incident did not visibly affect play on the field.
The hot mic moment was not the only notable off-field development during the regional weekend. Former NBA player Jason Williams was ejected from Texas Tech’s game against Florida after celebrating a two-run home run by his daughter, Mia Williams, who had previously played for the Gators before transferring to the Red Raiders. The homer helped Texas Tech eliminate Florida from the tournament.
Texas will open Women’s College World Series play against the Tennessee Volunteers on Thursday in the double-elimination portion of the tournament.
