Ikpeba explains Bassey benching in Fulham win over United

Former Nigeria striker Victor Ikpeba has suggested tactical rotation was behind Fulham coach Marco Silva’s decision to bench Calvin Bassey during the club’s 2–1 Premier League win over Manchester United on Sunday at Old Trafford.

Speaking to All Nigeria Soccer, Ikpeba said the move was likely influenced by Fulham’s demanding schedule and the need to manage Bassey’s workload. “Bassey has played a lot of games recently, so rotation is normal,” Ikpeba explained. “It doesn’t mean the coach has lost faith in him.”

The former Monaco forward added that Silva prioritised balance for a high-intensity match. “Against United, Fulham needed fresh legs and tactical discipline,” Ikpeba noted, stressing that competition for places is healthy.

Bassey, who has been a regular starter this season, watched as Fulham sealed a dramatic victory, a result that strengthened their push up the Premier League table and underlined the squad depth Silva is relying on.
