ILT20 gives African associate cricketers elite exposure

Seven emerging players from ICC African Associate Member nations – Botswana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Tanzania and Uganda – are gaining hands-on experience in the ongoing ILT20 Season 4 as part of a development push by the Emirates Cricket Board. This season in the UAE (running through December and concluding with the January 4 final) has seen these talents train alongside international stars with various franchise teams, stepping onto a bigger stage than ever before.

The initiative places them in everyday team activities, from intense practice drills to fitness work and match preparations, giving them a rare look at top-tier T20 professionalism. Kenya’s Francis Mutua, with Desert Vipers, described the chance as “career-defining,” while Tanzania’s Mohammed Yunusu Issa, practicing with MI Emirates, highlighted the leap in standard compared with home cricket.

organisers say the experience will help elevate cricket back in these nations. “Training beside world-class players and coaches will sharpen their skills and inspire others,” ILT20 CEO David White said, stressing the league’s commitment to growing the sport beyond traditional centres.
