Italy U21 call-ups put Nigeria at risk of losing duo

Nigeria’s hopes of securing Michael Kayode and Honest Ahanor have taken a hit after both defenders received Italy U21 call-ups during the current international break.

Kayode has impressed at Brentford with his pace and long throws, while 18-year-old Ahanor has grown rapidly at Atalanta since his €17m move. “They are exciting prospects with strong European exposure,” a football analyst said.

Though still eligible for Nigeria under FIFA rules, their acceptance signals intent. “Choosing Italy at this stage shows where their focus is,” a former international noted.

The NFF has tried to convince both players, but Italy now holds the advantage. Unless circumstances change, Nigeria risk missing out on two promising talents for the long term.
