Job Ochieng Makes History as Real Sociedad Win Copa del Rey

Job Ochieng wasn’t on the pitch. But his name is in the history books.

The Harambee Stars winger has become the first Kenyan to win a major trophy in Spanish football after Real Sociedad defeated Atlético Madrid 4-3 on penalties in the Copa del Rey final in Seville on Saturday. The match ended 2-2 after 90 minutes, with goalkeeper Unai Marrero saving two spot-kicks to seal the win.

Ochieng missed the final through injury sustained during Kenya’s match against Estonia last month. But he featured in two senior games this season — including the Copa del Rey semifinal against Athletic Bilbao — earning his winner’s medal.

Real Sociedad’s fourth Copa del Rey title. Kenya’s first piece of Spanish silverware.
