Lookman Fires Atletico Into Champions League With Penalty Win

Ademola Lookman ended a three-match goal drought in style on Monday, converting a first-half penalty as Atletico Madrid beat Osasuna 2-1 to mathematically secure their place in next season’s UEFA Champions League. It was the Nigerian forward’s eighth goal in all competitions since arriving from Atalanta in January.

The penalty came after a VAR review confirmed that Javi Galán had handled the ball in the box. Lookman stepped up and sent goalkeeper Aitor Fernández the wrong way, slotting into the bottom corner. Alexander Sørloth added a second from a Marcos Llorente cross before Llorente himself was sent off late on with a second yellow card.

Osasuna pulled one back through Kike Barja deep in stoppage time, but it wasn’t enough. Atletico held on with ten men to take all three points and confirm their Champions League return for next season.
