Lookman Scores in UCL Quarterfinal to Join Exclusive List of Nigerian Greats

Ademola Lookman wrote his name into Super Eagles history on Tuesday night. His first-time finish in the 31st minute at the Metropolitano — restoring Atlético’s 3-2 aggregate lead against Barcelona after the Catalans had levelled — made him only the fourth Nigerian ever to score in a Champions League quarterfinal.

He joins Victor Osimhen (2023), Samuel Chukwueze (2022) and Obafemi Martins (2006) in that company. It was his sixth goal since joining Atlético in the winter transfer window.

Marcos Llorente picked him out with a low cross. Lookman did the rest — calm, first time, past Joan García. The goal came at the moment Barcelona had the tie level and momentum. Lookman killed it.

Atlético are in the semifinals. And Lookman is playing the football of his life.
