Marseille Overlook Chelle as Ligue 1 Door Stays Ajar

Olympique de Marseille have decided against appointing Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle as their new manager this February, opting instead for former club captain Habib Beye to take charge of the Ligue 1 side as they reshape their technical bench.

Chelle, 48, had emerged as a reported contender for the Vélodrome role after enhancing his reputation by steering the Super Eagles to a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. His growing profile and tactical discipline fueled speculation of a return to French club football.

However, Marseille’s hierarchy chose experience and familiarity, with Beye handed the reins in a move seen as a bid to stabilize results. “Marseille needed someone who understands the club’s identity,” a source close to the negotiations said.

Despite the setback, Chelle’s ambitions in Ligue 1 remain alive. Reports indicate he is monitoring other potential openings, with struggling FC Nantes mentioned as a possible destination. “My focus is on continuing to grow and competing at the highest level,” Chelle previously stated.

Under contract with Nigeria until 2027, any switch would require formal talks, but the French top flight may yet offer him another shot.
