Mikel demands NFF resignation after World Cup setback

Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has called for the entire leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to resign after the national team failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America. The ex-Chelsea midfielder said the country’s absence from the tournament for a second straight edition is “a disaster” for Nigerian football.

“It’s unacceptable for a country of our size and talent not to be at the World Cup,” Mikel said, insisting those running the federation must step aside.

Nigeria’s hopes ended after a penalty defeat to DR Congo in the African qualifying playoffs, continuing a frustrating run that also saw the Super Eagles miss the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

“We should be leading African football, not falling behind,” Mikel added, urging authorities to investigate the failure and rebuild the system to prevent another setback.
