Morocco edge Nigeria on penalties to reach AFCON final

Morocco booked their place in the Africa Cup of Nations final after defeating Nigeria on penalties following a tense semi-final draw on January 14, 2026, in Rabat. The hosts held their nerve in the shootout to seal a showdown with Senegal.

The match ended level after extra time, with both sides cancelling each other out in a cagey contest marked by discipline and few clear chances. Nigeria threatened through Victor Osimhen, but Morocco’s defence stood firm, while the Super Eagles were denied by key saves late on.

“It was a very difficult game against a strong opponent,” Morocco coach Walid Regragui said. “The players showed character and belief until the end.”

Nigeria boss José Peseiro rued missed opportunities. “We fought hard and were close,” he said. “Penalties are always cruel.”

Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou proved decisive in the shootout, saving once to tilt the contest Morocco’s way. “We stayed calm and trusted ourselves,” Bounou said.

The victory sends Morocco into the final as they chase continental glory on home soil.
