NFF denies FIFA verdict on Congo protest

The Nigeria Football Federation has dismissed reports that FIFA has ruled on its protest over DR Congo’s player eligibility in the 2026 World Cup qualifying play-off, confirming this week that no decision has yet been communicated.
Nigeria were knocked out by the Leopards on penalties last November in the final round of the African qualifiers, ending the Super Eagles’ hopes of reaching the intercontinental play-offs. Shortly after the shootout defeat, the NFF filed a formal complaint to FIFA questioning the status of several Congolese players.
At the heart of the protest are concerns over DR Congo’s nationality laws, which generally prohibit dual citizenship for adults. The NFF believes some players may hold European passports while representing the Leopards.
“We are still awaiting official feedback from FIFA,” an NFF official said. “No verdict has been delivered at this stage.”
DR Congo have not publicly responded to the latest clarification, while FIFA is yet to issue a statement.
