Nigeria drawn against Morocco in Davis Cup playoff

Nigeria will battle Morocco on September 18–20, 2026, in the Davis Cup World Group I playoff, chasing promotion and a first-ever win over their long-time North African rivals.
The International Tennis Federation confirmed the fixture, with the venue still to be decided. Morocco, world No. 48 and Africa’s second-ranked nation after Egypt, slipped into the playoff following a 3–1 loss to Colombia. Nigeria advanced after defeating Uzbekistan in a decisive Group II tie.
“This is a huge opportunity for us to step up,” a Nigerian team source said. “We respect Morocco, but we’re ready to compete.”
A Moroccan official responded: “Our target is clear — return to World Group I.”
Since their first meeting in 1973, Morocco have dominated the rivalry. However, observers believe Nigeria’s recent rise adds fresh intrigue to a high-stakes African showdown.
