Okonkwo Gets FIFA Clearance to Play for Super Eagles — Debut Pencilled in for May

Arthur Okonkwo wanted it done fast. FIFA obliged on Monday — and now the 24-year-old Wrexham goalkeeper is in line for his Super Eagles debut next month.
Okonkwo had represented England at U16, U17, and U18 level before deciding his international future lay with Nigeria. Once his mind was made up, the process moved quickly. Officials pointed to his enthusiasm as a key factor in accelerating the switch.
The debut looks set for the Unity Cup in May. Nigeria open against Zimbabwe on May 26 at The Valley in South London — and Okonkwo could be between the posts.
The NFF didn’t hide where things stand. “The coach wants him, and would like to have him in the squad as soon as possible,” an official said. Eric Chelle has been monitoring Okonkwo’s form at Wrexham, where he has been outstanding — 42 appearances this season, 10 clean sheets in 37 Championship matches, and one of the best goalkeeping records in the division.
Nigeria haven’t always had their best options available between the sticks. Okonkwo changes that conversation.
Former Arsenal. Now Wrexham. Next: the Super Eagles shirt — if May goes to plan.
