Okoronkwo WAFCON Hopes in Doubt After Meniscus Tear Sidelines Falcons Forward

Esther Okoronkwo has been here before. ACL in 2022, missed AFCON. Now a meniscus tear — and WAFCON in July.
The 29-year-old Super Falcons forward picked up the injury during AFC Toronto’s goalless draw against Halifax Women on May 3. Head coach Marco Milanovic confirmed it quickly: “Esther suffered a bit of a meniscus damage to her knee and the initial prognosis is that she’ll be out for about six weeks.”
Six weeks. WAFCON opens July 25. The maths are tight, not impossible. But returning from a meniscus tear to compete at a major tournament — with just days of preparation — is a serious ask.
Her value to Nigeria is clear. Two goals, seven assists as the Falcons won the African Championship in Morocco. She makes them a different team going forward.
WAFCON is not just a title chase — reaching the semi-finals is what earns a Women’s World Cup spot. Nigeria need Okoronkwo fit. Right now that’s a race against the calendar.
