Tosin in Frame to Captain Chelsea With Fernandez Banned, James Injured

Tosin Could Captain Chelsea as Fernandez Sanctioned, James Still Out

Tosin Adarabioyo is in line to captain Chelsea. Manager Liam Rosenior confirmed the Nigerian defender is in the leadership group as the Blues prepare for their FA Cup clash with Port Vale — without their two most senior captains.

Enzo Fernandez has been sanctioned and made unavailable after making comments about his future at the club. Reece James remains sidelined with injury. Both first-choice leaders are out.

That opens the door for Tosin.

“We’ve got many leaders,” Rosenior said. “Moises Caicedo is in our leadership group. Tosin, too. We’ve got Cole Palmer, we’ve got Joao Pedro. We’ve got Marc Cucurella.” The manager said he would name his captain when announcing the team.

Tosin, 28, has made 26 appearances this season — 1,414 minutes of football, one goal. Solid, unspectacular, dependable. He remains eligible for Nigeria’s Super Eagles despite his England youth caps.

Chelsea have options. But for Tosin, this is the kind of moment that defines where a career goes next.
